How Are Calories Burned Calculated?
This calculator uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method to estimate calories burned during physical activity. One MET is the energy cost of sitting at rest — roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour. Activities are assigned a MET value based on their intensity, and calories burned are calculated as MET × weight (kg) × duration (hours). The higher the MET value, the more energy the activity requires.
MET values are derived from the Compendium of Physical Activities, a research-based reference used by health professionals worldwide. While this method provides a good estimate for most people, actual calorie burn can vary based on factors like age, gender, body composition, fitness level, and exercise efficiency. A person with more muscle mass, for example, may burn more calories during the same activity than someone with less muscle.
Use this calculator to compare different activities and find options that suit your fitness level and schedule. Even daily activities like cooking, cleaning, and gardening contribute to your total energy expenditure. For personalised exercise recommendations, consider consulting a fitness professional or healthcare provider.
