Calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate
What is BMR?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to maintain basic physiological functions at complete rest — including breathing, circulation, cell production, and temperature regulation. It represents the minimum energy required to keep your body alive and accounts for roughly 60–75% of total daily calorie expenditure for most people.
BMR is primarily influenced by lean body mass, age, sex, and genetics. Muscle tissue is more metabolically active than fat, meaning individuals with higher muscle mass typically have a higher BMR. Age also plays a role: BMR naturally declines by about 1–2% per decade after age 20 due to gradual muscle loss and hormonal changes.
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is considered one of the most accurate BMR estimation formulas for the general population. Once you know your BMR, you can estimate your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) by applying an activity multiplier that reflects your lifestyle and exercise habits.
