What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple numerical measure calculated from a person's weight and height. It is widely used as a screening tool to identify whether an individual falls into a weight category that may increase their risk of health problems. BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in metres.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a BMI below 18.5 as underweight, 18.5–24.9 as normal weight, 25–29.9 as overweight, and 30 or above as obese. While BMI is a useful population-level indicator, it does not directly measure body fat and cannot account for differences in muscle mass, bone density, age, or ethnicity.

A healthy BMI range is generally considered to be between 18.5 and 24.9. Maintaining a weight within this range is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic conditions. If your BMI falls outside this range, consider speaking with a healthcare professional for personalised advice.
